Help! My Roots Are Dry

The Cause and Cure for Dry Roots

Big idea: Dry roots are deadly

In your opinion, why are dry roots deadly?

The cause of dry roots

What causes our roots to dry up?

We find the cause of dry roots in Job 18.

“Indeed, the light of the wicked goes out, And the flame of his fire gives no light...His roots are dried below, and his branch is cut off above.” Job 18:5 &16 NASB

Wickedness is the cause of dry roots

What is your immediate reaction when you hear that wickedness is the cause of dry roots?

Wicked— wicked (hostile to God); wicked, guilty of sin (against God or man)

We can be hostile toward God in many ways.

· Rejecting His authority in our lives by doing our own thing

· Refusing to believe the truth of His word

· Reinterpreting the word to fit our own beliefs

How have you been hostile toward God?

We are often guilty of sin through action and inaction. Sin is missing the mark; it is falling short.

Read NASB 17-9:13 Hosea

What does this passage reveal about sin as a cause of dry roots?

The cure for dry roots

What is the cure for dry roots?

“For there is hope for a tree, when it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and its shoots will not fail. Though its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the dry soil, At the scent of water it will flourish and put forth sprigs like a plant.” Job 9-14:7 NASB

What does this passage say is the cure for dry roots?

How?

Three passages to consider: Jeremiah 2:13, John 4:10, and John 4:13 & 14

What do these passages reveal about water as the cure for dry roots?

What do they say about God? What do they say about Jesus?

Three ways Jesus cures dry roots:

His presence—remaining in

His promises—standing on

His provision—taking in

How have you experienced God/Jesus as the cure when your roots were dry?

“Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.” John 38-7:37

What does it look like to drink of Jesus?
